“I've gotten wiser and more careful about who gets
to my depths. I wish I could have maintained my openness, but if you don't
protect yourself from the shit that goes down on a personal level in this
business, you'll be a cripple by 25." —Rock ‘n’ roll singer-songwriter Dan
Fogelberg (1951-2007), quoted in David Rensin, “Dan Fogelberg: Home Free At Last,” Rolling Stone Magazine, March 13, 1975
While posting this, I have been listening to Fogelberg's wonderful 1977 LP, Nether Lands. It's a reminder of this indelible part of my musical experience in high school--the part that clings to me most all these years later--and a reminder of what fans like me lost when he died a decade ago.
