This morning, on the way to work, I heard a bright
wall of sound—a brassy upsurge enough to fill a storm, only this was coming
from the east side of Times Square. Trust me: You have all kinds of sounds in
this crossroads of the world, but not this.
I looked up and saw the image you see
here: a marching band’s horn players on top of their bus, playing for all they were
worth. Just in time, I caught them on camera before they moved away with the light.
I wondered what the “VCU” meant, then googled it. It
turns out to refer to Virginia Commonwealth University’s band, which appeared
on The Today Show as the week came to
a conclusion.
