Photo of the Day: State Line Lookout, Alpine, NJ, Spring 2015

I took the photo here came during what seems like a long-ago time in my life now. Sadly, it does for many others, too.

When my father, by then in his nineties, could no longer drive, I used to take him, on a fine Sunday, up to this scenic overlook on the Palisades. Only half a mile south of the New Jersey-New York state line, State Line Lookout offered magnificent views of the Hudson River, since, at a 520-foot elevation, it was at the highest point on the Palisades Cliffs.

My dad—who, at that point, was not only still alive, but also ambulatory and even comparatively vigorous at nearly age 99—used to love the fresh air and magnificent vistas in this spot. So, as you can see here, did many other people. So had their parents and even grandparents.

For one reason or another, I haven’t been up there in quite some time. But the scene would have to be drastically different now in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Most obviously, everyone here would be wearing masks. And, for the life of them, they’d better stay a safe distance apart.

It just goes to show: Don’t assume that everything you once enjoyed will remain the same. And enjoy the beauty in the world with those who matter to you, while both are still around.

Photo of the Day: Taking in the Palisades, State Line Lookout, NJ

I took this shot of State Line Lookout along the Palisades, in the northeast corner of New Jersey, near the New York border, almost two weeks ago, in the same photo session as this earlier post.

Photo of the Day: A Light in the Forest

Well, okay, maybe not a forest per se—more like a small stretch of woods. Anyway, here is the latest in a series of pictures dating back two weekends ago, when I had the chance to walk around State Line Lookout in Alpine, N.J.

Photo of the Day: A Beautiful Day for a Walk

That’s the way it felt for me a week and a half ago, when I strolled through State Line Lookout in Alpine, N.J. I’m only sorry I got there in mid-afternoon, with the hours of light becoming increasingly scarce.

Photo of the Day: Standing Tall

The photo accompanying this post is another image I took from nine days ago at State Line Lookout in Alpine, N.J., just off Palisades Parkway.

Photo of the Day: Remembrance Rock

Maybe it was because it was easily one of the most beautiful days so far this fall, or maybe it was because so many people simply needed to feel normal again after the unexpected “Snowtober” day of the Halloween weekend. But this past Sunday, the crowds were out at State Line Lookout in Alpine, N.J., just off Palisades Parkway.

The photo accompanying this post, which I took on that day, shows the wonderful views from that park of the Hudson River.
