When I took this photo, it was late August, with an
unusual nip (and, it turned out, short-lived) nip in the air, but nothing like
the plunging temperatures and “wintry mix” we’re about to experience in
earnest.
But by this time tomorrow, according to a weather forecast
I just looked at, anywhere from four to eight inches of snow should fall in
Pittsfield, MA, making for a true representation of winter—and Christmastime—for
churchgoers at the First Baptist Church
on South Street.
This group of believers first formed in this
Berkshire County community in 1772. The
present church was dedicated in 1930 in another kind of winter: the Great
Depression that gripped America at that time.
What got churchgoers—and all Americans—through that
difficult time was hope, the same emotion experienced at Advent and Christmas. I
wish that the brightness of hope might be felt again tomorrow, at First Baptist
Church and all other churches tomorrow.
