Located on the edge between the Morningside Heights
and Harlem communities, Riverside Church
has been a major presence in the spiritual life of New York since 1841. I
snapped this photo while visiting the area a month ago. Other pictures I took
of this institution would have given an idea of its physical immensity (100
feet wide, covering two city blocks), but I chose this one because the ornate
detail at the entrance calls to mind its original inspiration: the 13th Century Gothic cathedral in Chartres, France.
For a half hour before and after 11 am services on
Sunday, then again from 3 to 3:58 pm the same day, you can hear the magnificent
Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon, given to the church by John D.
Rockefeller Jr. in the 1920s in memory of his mother.
