Quote of the Day (Hal Borland, on Autumn, ‘The Eternal Corrective’)

“Autumn is the eternal corrective. It is ripeness and color and a time of maturity; but it is also breadth, and depth, and distance. What man can stand with autumn on a hilltop and fail to see the span of his world and the meaning of the rolling hills that reach to the far horizon?” — American writer, journalist and naturalist Hal Borland (1900-1978), Sundial of the Seasons (1964)

I took the attached photo of a scene from Ringwood Manor here in New Jersey back in November 2015. We’re still nowhere near the colorful landscape I marveled at back then. But dropping temperatures in this area like we’ve had the last couple of days and nights will bring us closer to that point.

Photo of the Day: Rust in Autumn, Ringwood Manor, NJ

Photo of the Day: Water and Autumn Sky, Ringwood Manor, NJ

I’ve often found that changing your position—shooting from a different angle or height—can produce a different shot than what you might be used to. That proved to be the case for me at Ringwood Manor in northern New Jersey this past Sunday. Not just the objects in the distance, but those at my feet looked so much different as I crouched down to snap this picture.

Photo of the Day: Waterfall, Ringwood Manor, NJ

A last chance to catch the colors of autumn was my primary reason for driving up to Ringwood Manor in northern New Jersey on Sunday. But an additional fine photo opportunity was provided by this close-up of a waterfall on the grounds, not far from the stunning, historic country house.

I took the image accompanying this post on a Sunday afternoon in the first week of May, on a visit to Ringwood Manor in northern New Jersey.

Photo of the Day: Hillside, Ringwood Manor, NJ

In my “Photo of the Day” post from yesterday, I mentioned that Ringwood Manor in northern New Jersey was filled with “acres of lush natural beauty.” This photo I took this past May, taking in a hilltop on the site, gives you an idea of what I had in mind when I wrote those words.

Photo of the Day: Sphinx, Ringwood Manor, NJ

Back in May, I took this photo of a granite sphinx statue outside of the Glass Piazza in Ringwood Manor in northern New Jersey. As I mentioned in a prior post, this estate—a late colonial-era iron works, then a 19th-century country manor—contains, in addition to acres of lush natural beauty, a number of outdoor sculptures, such as this one.
