“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”—“Gonzo” journalist Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005), "Fear and Loathing at the Super Bowl" (Rolling Stone #155, (Feb. 28, 1974); republished in Gonzo Papers, Vol. 1: The Great Shark Hunt: Strange Tales from a Strange Time (1979)
Hunter S. Thompson wrote that line about America’s
growing obsession with football—and I’m sure that there have been times over
the last few years when both Green Bay Packer and New York Jet fans felt that
it could also apply to polarizing quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
But this year, politics is becoming more like football
every day—brutal, nasty, and yes, with all the sudden twists of the past few
weeks, “weird.”
Wake me when it’s over, okay?
