I first heard of Savannah College of Art and Design on my initial visit to the city
in 1999. Even then, I was impressed by its contribution to Savannah. On an
afternoon tour last month, while I was on vacation in
the area, I took this photo.
Founded in 1978, the college has now grown to offer more than
40 majors to more than 11,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100
countries. Here is Poetter Hall (formerly Preston Hall). The institution renovated
this onetime Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory to serve as its first classroom
and administration building. That was the first signal of the school’s
significant work in historic preservation--one that I hope it always continues.
