I took this photo several weeks ago, in an area I
had long wanted to see but hadn’t had the chance to: the new extension of Overpeck County Park, not far from
where I live in Bergen County, N.J. None
of us knew then how much our lives, as well as those of relatives, friends, and
colleagues, would be upended by Hurricane Sandy. I haven’t been in the park
since, so I don’t know how much damage it sustained. Seeing this photo is a
reminder that the simple things in life—a stroll involving the warmth of the
sun and the colors of the fall day—are not to be taken for granted.
