“For me, all they'll say is 'Laverne,' and for [ex-husband]
Rob [Reiner] all they'll say is 'Meathead.' We're stuck with it.”—Penny
Marshall, former star of sitcom long-running sitcom Laverne and Shirley, describing her future tombstone, in Tad
Friend, “Ink: Charmed Life,” The New Yorker, September 17, 2012
The birthday of Penny Marshall is today, and, depending on which reference source you use, she
turns either 69 or 70. The onetime actress, now promoting her memoir My Mother Was Nuts, might be harder on
her cinematic legacy than she has to be. While Big, Awakenings and A League of Their Own are unlikely to be
studied in future film schools, their success made it possible for more women
to be trusted by Hollywood studios with the reins of major films.
