"If you become President, you’re guaranteed to develop some nervous habit."—Attributed to impressionist Rich Little
Well, can you blame them? I see now, for instance, that President Obama has hit his all-time low in the polls.
But truth be told, no matter what the party, every President usually wakes to a similar headline at some point in his administration. That's what happens when Americans stop smelling the roses and start picking up rotten eggs to throw at their chief executives.
For guys who are, at heart, congenital narcissists, this has to be the shock of their lives.
“Some nervous habit”? It’s a wonder Presidents don’t start acting like Inspector Dreyfus, the beleaguered (and, eventually, positively insane) boss of Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies, who, with each escapade of his underling, begins to develop an ever-more-noticeable facial tic--then sputters in rage when someone notices it.
