Photo of the Day: Calder’s ‘Five Swords,’ at Storm King Art Center

The other day, in a prior post, I alluded to the presence of The Arch, by Alexander Calder, at Storm King Art Center in upstate New York. Today is time to spotlight another work of his in that unusual collection of outdoor sculptures that I photographed last October: Five Swords (1976), on “Museum Hill,” the site of many of the center’s earliest acquisitions.

As I did the other day in my post on a Henry Moore sculpture, I did not want to miss another opportunity to write about Storm King Art Center, an outdoor sculpture park in upstate New York. I snapped this photograph of Alexander Calder’s The Arch (1975), set in The Meadows part of the site, in the same afternoon photo session last October when I took the one by Moore and a number of other artists.

Each spring brings the opportunity to visit the reopened Storm King Art Center, a striking collection of outdoor sculptures set against a dramatic landscape of fields, hills, and woodlands, located an hour north of New York City.

I have put up posts before on this sprawling site (including this one), taken during an afternoon I spent photographing last fall. But I just had, at some point, to get around to this artwork by British sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986), Reclining Connected Forms (1969), set on Museum Hill.

This 1963 steel artwork, created by American sculptor David Smith, is on display in Storm King Art Center, an outdoor sculpture park that I visited in upstate New York one Sunday this past fall.

Photo of the Day: ‘Pyramidian,’ at Storm King Art Center, NY

This is yet another in a series of unusual art works that I photographed last October on a visit to Storm King Art Center, a park of outdoor sculptures, located an hour north of New York City.   
Pyramidian was created by Mark Di Suvero from 1987 to 1998. A 65-foot high steel sculpture, it dominates the landscape--especially so on the rather overcast afternoon when I went.

This painted aluminum artwork, created by George Sugarman from 1975 to 1977, was in Storm King Art Center, a park filled with outdoor sculptures in upstate New York, when I visited there late last October.
