Photo of the Day: Fall Colors—Not There Yet, But…

For nearly 30 years, Nyack Beach State Park in Rockland County, NY, has been one of my favorite places to stop in fall—or, indeed, in almost any time of year. This coming November will be two years since I took this particular shot.

Because of the very warm weather we had in this part of the Northeast through most of September, I think it’s still going to be a few weeks before we see the colors of autumn come out. Then it’ll be all in a rush and, before we know it, the season will be over.

Quote of the Day (Thomas Hood, on ‘Autumn in the Misty Morn’)

"I saw old Autumn in the misty morn
Stand shadowless like silence, listening
To silence, for no lonely bird would sing
Into his hollow ear from woods forlorn,
Nor lowly hedge nor solitary thorn." — Thomas Hood (1799-1845), “Autumn,” from The Poetical Works Of Thomas Hood (1861)

I took the accompanying photo last fall at Nyack Beach State Park, in Rockland County, NY.

Quote of the Day (Psalms, on God’s Justice ‘From the River to the Ends of the Earth’)

“May they fear you as long as the sun
and as long as the moon, generations untold.
May he come down like rain on new-mown grass,
like showers that moisten the earth.
May the just man flourish in his days—
and abundant peace till the moon is no more.
And may he hold sway from sea to sea,
from the River to the ends of the earth.”—Psalms 72: 5-8, in The Book of Psalms: A Translation With Commentary, by Robert Alter (2007)

Photo of the Day: River Dock, Nyack Beach State Park

This is still another from a series of images I took over a week ago at Nyack Beach State Park, along the banks of the Hudson River, in Rockland County, NY. This time, I was facing south as the sun began its sad, late-afternoon descent.

Photo of the Day: Big Red, Nyack Beach State Park, NY

As I sorted through the images I took this past Sunday at Nyack Beach State Park in Rockland County, this one practically leaped out of the computer screen. The scarlet-flamed leaves, I guess, just stood out against the view of the Hudson River here—an ideal way to convey the allure of autumn in upstate New York.

I just wish I knew the name of this particular tree. Please feel free to send your suggestions.
