Photo of the Day: ‘Springtime of Life’ at Hudson River Park, NYC

“I don't remember being very sensitive to spring in my early youth. I think the small child for whom everything is new, is not very surprised at miracles. The springtime of life begins with adolescence.”— French novelist-diarist and Nobel Literature laureate AndrĂ© Gide (1869-1951), Autumn Leaves (1950)

I took the image accompanying this post almost exactly two years ago at Hudson River Park in Manhattan. As I remember it, the day was not as warm as it was today—but, as you can tell from the photo, probably every bit as beautiful.

I took this picture one Saturday afternoon in Lower Manhattan, early in the spring, while walking around Hudson River Park.

Photo of the Day: Taking Wing With Spring

While down by Greenwich Village in mid-April, I walked several blocks west to Hudson River Park and found just about everybody one could imagine out to absorb every bit of the beautiful day. (See my prior post of another scene that afternoon.)

Photo of the Day: Saturday in the Park (Hudson River, That Is)

Years ago, a weather forecaster in the New York area would periodically proclaim a set of 24 hours “one of the 10 most beautiful days of the year.” I used to chuckle to myself that he’d invariably exceed his allotment by, oh, May 1. But this past Saturday had a fair claim to landing on this list for 2016.

I happened to be down in Greenwich Village attending a play that afternoon, but it felt like a sin to be inside. So after the matinee, I wandered west over to Hudson River Park. My post from the other day was about bicycle riders down there. But in truth, New Yorkers thronged the park that day for a whole variety of activities, which I think you can sense from this photo I took of a stretch of green, plus the edge of the waterfront, in the 500-acre park.

Photo of the Day: 2-Way Traffic, Hudson River Park, NYC

On Saturday, at Hudson River Park in lower Manhattan, I stood, more or less in one spot, and snapped what felt like endless pictures of bicycle riders. The one I selected for a blog post yesterday focused squarely on an individual, and cropping the picture enabled me to sharpen that focus further.

But I picked that with some reluctance over this one you see now. There is more complexity in this image—three riders, not simply one, going in opposite directions—and, consequently, a potential positive outcome (three riders, not just one, completing their journey).

Photo of the Day: Ready for Action

Today, rising temperatures and bright sunshine lured New Yorkers, one after another, out to Hudson River Park in lower Manhattan. Bicycle riding was an especially popular activity. The gentleman in this picture I took late in the afternoon while down there seems especially focused on taking in all the day would allow.
