“Tonight was one of those motionless hot summer nights. The concrete pier empty, the strung red, white, yellow bulbs burning like insects in the air above the wooden emptiness. The managers of the various carnival pitches stood, like melting wax dummies, eyes staring blindly, not talking, all down the line.”—American science fiction/fantasy fiction writer and screenwriter Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), “The Dwarf,” in The October Country (1955)

Photo of the Day: Enter the Dragon
Another photograph I took this past Sunday (along with
this one) of a carnival held at Overpeck County Park, not far from
where I live in Bergen County, NJ.Sunday, April 27, 2014

Photo of the Day: Leaning Ferris Wheel
It was an optical illusion, of course, but this is
how it looked to me, for a second, when I first came on the scene at an angle,
at the carnival held this past weekend at Overpeck County Park in Leonia, N.J.

Photo of the Day: The Landslide Will Bring You Down
No, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac were nowhere in
evidence. But the lyrics to their Seventies hit came to mind when I saw this
particular ride at a carnival held today at Overpeck County Park in Leonia, N.J., not far from where I live. As
soon as I saw the name of the ride, it became a prime target for my camera. I
associate carnivals overwhelmingly with summer, so this one, at the start of
fall, made me think a great deal about “the seasons of my life.”
