“We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.”—British science-fiction writer H. G. Wells (1866-1946), In the Fourth Year: Anticipations of a World Peace (1918)
This year, with friends and relatives aging—and
increasingly vulnerable to dangerous medical conditions (including
COVID-19)—this quotation has taken on unexpected meaning for me. Life is, as
Wells writes, “a miracle and mystery”—and a gift, in no way to be taken for
granted.
