The late-fall weather this week while I was on
vacation in DC was not conducive for bringing out beautiful butterflies,
but I imagine they appear in great profusion in other times of the year. In
any case, as I walked down on the Ninth Street side of the National Museum of
Natural History as a shortcut to somewhere else, I was so taken by the
Smithsonian Butterfly Habitat Garden
that I took this shot.
Perhaps I was so struck by this scene because of the four different butterfly habitats represented here: wetland, meadow, wood's edge and backyard. Well, that and the colors of fall, of course.
