My hometown, Englewood, NJ, held its Juneteenth Carnival and Festival this
past weekend, from June 13 to 16. (Juneteenth combines June and 19—or June 9,
1865, when the abolition of slavery was announced in the state of Texas. This
is now the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery
in the United States.) I took this particular photograph on Saturday in Depot Square, not far from where I live.
