One World Trade Center, at least when I encountered it over
the Christmas holidays, comes up at you all off a sudden, well along on a block
thronged with people. When I saw this bottom section, it reminded me of nothing
so much as some kind of neo-Art Deco structure. And then you read the identification
on the front, reminding you, even amid all the furious motion of the street, of
what was lost a little over 13 years ago.
But this is always New York’s way, the urge to pull itself up, no matter how bruised or damaged, and move on—and, at 1,776 feet, in this case, up—again.
