Fan: “You don’t look like Cary Grant.”
Cary Grant: “I know. Nobody does.”
Exchange quoted by Peter Bogdanovich, “My Favorite Star,” The New York Observer, Nov. 25, 2008
(Bogdanovich’s recent appreciation of Grant reminded me of a book signing I attended at Fairleigh Dickinson University some years ago, back when Bogdanovich was promoting his series of interviews with major filmmakers, Who the Devil Made It. The occasion lent itself to a virtuoso series of impressions by the critic-turned-filmmaker, including one of Grant. Today’s quote comes from an article that’s particularly knowing about the one star who became “the real auteur of many of the films he starred in.”)
