Quote of the Day (Stanley Kunitz, on a ‘Murderous Time’)

“In a murderous time

   the heart breaks and breaks

      and lives by breaking.

It is necessary to go

   through dark and deeper dark

and not to turn.”—American poet Stanley Kunitz (1905-2006), “The Testing-Tree,” in The Testing Tree (1971)

Quote of the Day (Stanley Kunitz, on Summer and Desire)

“What makes the engine go?

 Desire, desire, desire.

 The longing for the dance

 stirs in the buried life.

 One season only,

and it's done.”— American poet Stanley Kunitz (1905-2006), “Touch Me,” from Passing Through: The Later Poems, New and Selected (1995)
