I must confess here to a bit of poetic—or, to be more accurate, photographic—license. I took this picture a year ago, but it was not in one of the apple orchards that Whitman memorably conjured up here, but on the street where I live in Bergen County, N.J.

Still, I hope I’ll be forgiven. The image I wanted to preserve here was one of beauty—and one that, perhaps, so many of us can use now, stuck as we are in our homes more than we want to, amid this coronavirus outbreak.

This afternoon, while out for a walk, I noticed this particularly lovely manifestation of the outbreak of spring just outside a local school, so I took this picture.

It’s a sign of the changing climate we’ve had that, had you seen the image above a few years ago, you would have guessed that I snapped it only within the last two weeks. However, I took it a month ago, in Overpeck County Park in Leonia, N.J., not far from where I live.

The warmth this spring has been startling, and a bit scary. Still, when it yields such beauty as this, you learn to glory in the moment.
