Quotes of the Day (Elvis, as Spiritual Center)

Jimmy Rabbitte Jr. (played by Robert Arkins): “Elvis is not soul.”

Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr. (played by Colm Meaney): [defensively] “Elvis is God.”

Jimmy Jr. : “I never pictured God with a fat gut and corset singing ‘My Way’ at Caesar's Palace.”—The Commitments (1991), screenplay by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, and Roddy Doyle, based on the novel by Roddy Doyle, directed by Alan Parker

"I haven't had a drink or done drugs for seven months. I feel good. It's quite hardcore knowing when you come off stage you won't get drunk. Before the gig we get in a huddle and pray to Elvis to look after us."—British singer-songwriter Robbie Williams, July 4, 2001, interview with Radio 1

In the old days growing up, we were taught to pray to St. Anthony, St. Jude, or whoever the occasion demanded. Nowadays, it looks as if it’s rock stars who are the new icons—no, deities.

Nietzsche might have thought that God is Dead, but is anyone seriously going to doubt news of Elvis sightings in K-Mart?
