(He was one of the “Two Johns” –JFK was the other–who, in the early 1960s, did so much to change American Protestants’ idea of Roman Catholics. It was impossible not to love that earthy peasant’s face and his simple holiness. In the fullness of time, I’m sure, he will finally receive the recognition he wanted, in his modest way: sainthood. In the meantime, let’s fully honor this great and good man who died on this date in 1963.)
