“I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.”—Walter Parks Thatcher (played by George Colouris), Wall Street financier and stuffy guardian of Charles Foster Kane, on the latter’s wish to become a publisher, in Citizen Kane (1941), written by Herman Mankiewicz and Orson Welles
(Welles’ film retains all of its magic today as a meditation on the arrogance of youth and the losses incurred during middle and old age—only it’s much less fun to run a newspaper these days, as recent headlines from coast to coast about the “old media” remind us daily now. These days, it's a lot more fun to run an e-zine--or even a blog!)
