(As some would tell it, ignoring patrons and even throwing out mail didn’t endear him to the locals. Under the circumstances, I think we should be grateful – for the sake of literature, Faulkner’s patrons and his own well-being— that he felt resigning was better than “going postal”! By the way, whatever happened to the two-cent stamp?)
