In the dog days of summer, baseball certainly can be a job, as Susan Sarandon’s lovable baseball groupie Annie Savoy indicates. But come October, it more closely resembles “the church of baseball” she hails in the classic movie’s brilliant opening monologue. 

Actually, at this time of year, a number of fans like myself come to believe that the ways of the Almighty are inscrutable. And still more long-suffering acolytes (Cleveland Indian fans, stand up!) are—perish the thought!—thinking there is no God!
