Photo of the Day: Pineapple Lily, Berkshire Botanical Garden, Stockbridge, MA

In late August, wanting to see parts of the Berkshires I had not encountered on prior vacations over the past two decades, I made it a point to visit the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge, MA. On its 15 acres of cultivated land, this not-for-profit institution has been educating visitors on the great variety of plant life since 1934.

This particular image I photographed that late summer afternoon is the pineapple lily (Eucomis). Only 12 to 15 inches tall, this plant is extremely frost tender. But as you can see, it is most unusual and fascinating to behold—a little bit of the tropics somehow set down in the otherwise rocky soil of Western Massachusetts.
