It does not surprise me that one of the points on
the itinerary of Pope Francis while he is in New York City will be a visit to the 9/11 memorial site, including a multi-religious meeting for peace inside
Foundation Hall. He has, after all, likened
the Church’s mission to that of a field hospital: “It is useless to ask a
seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his
blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything
else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds.”
The World Trade Center attacks left real physical and psychic wounds from which the entire globe is still trying to recover. There is,
however, something in the power of water to renew the spirit. Maybe he will
feel this force as I did this past December, just before the new year, when I
stood in front of the reflecting pool at the memorial and took this photo.
