In my time, I have known people who simply couldn't wait
to go to a new car show. I have never been one of them—the changes in autos,
from one year to the next, have simply seemed too incremental for me to expend
much time and energy on attending such events.
But the one being held this past Saturday, at Veterans Memorial Park (or, as I have called it forever, Depot
Square) in my hometown of Englewood, NJ, seemed different. After all, this was
all about hybrid and electric cars—technology that, for the first time in
decades, really promises to transform fundamentally Americans’ nearly
century-long love affair with the automobile.
Such area companies as Cadillac, Honda, BMW, Audi, Nexus,
and Smart Car were on display from Saturday morning into late in the afternoon
in the brilliant warm sunshine. But I have to admit, given my lifelong
allegiance, that the car that caught my interest immediately was a Toyota
vehicle with a very large and imposing New York Yankees logo.
