Photo of the Day: World War Memorial, West New York, NJ

Here is another in a series of shots I snapped from a bus on the long ride into New York earlier this week. This striking structure atop the New Jersey Palisades, in Veterans Memorial Park in West New York, is called the World War Memorial—no other indication of which war. At the time it was created by the Works Progress Administration in the mid-1930s, there had been only one world war, and that had been so horrifying that most of the civilized world couldn’t believe anyone could ever want another. Silly us. Too bad we can't see the future, the same way we can see across the river to the New York City skyline on a clear day.
