Photo of the Day: An Idyllic Moment, Now Far Away

It seems hard to believe that the scene I beheld here—before Hurricane Sandy made damaged homes, torturous commutes and gas lines last seen in the Seventies an inescapable reality for all too many New Jerseyans—existed last than two weeks ago.  But I can still remember walking around the “New Overpeck Park” near me in Bergen County, N.J., bursting to explore a stretch of 100 acres, courtesy of a recently opened road.

I don’t want to linger on the thought that the stream that I and so many others beheld that lovely Sunday afternoon in mid-afternoon could have been churned and whipped into something ugly this past week—and even less the thought that it could ever happen again.
