Quote of the Day (Fr. Mychal Judge to NY’s Bravest, on “What God Has Called You to Do”)

“You do what God has called you to do. You show up. You put one foot in front of another. You get on the rig and you go out and you do the job—which is a mystery. And a surprise. You have no idea when you get on that rig. No matter how big the call. No matter how small. You have no idea what God is calling you to. But he needs you. He needs me. He needs all of us.”—Fr. Mychal Judge, addressing NY Fire Department Engine 73, Ladder 42, Bronx, NY, homily of September 10, 2001, one day before he died administering last rites at the World Trade Center bombing

To Fr. Judge, the 9/11 first responders, and the victims they rushed to save: Your life and example will never be forgotten. Even amid the doubt (and sometimes despair) 10 years after New York’s worst day, we know more than ever what Fr. Judge recognized: that in a fallen world (especially in a fallen world), God calls on even the most fallible among us to do his work, to our utmost, to our last measure of strength.
