Movie Quote of the Day (“A League of Their Own,” With Advice The Bosox Could Use)

Jimmy Dugan (played by Tom Hanks, to Evelyn Gardner, played by Bitty Schram): “Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying! THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!”—A League of Their Own (1992), screenplay by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, from a story by Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele, directed by Penny Marshall

A shocker last night for Red Sox Nation, and for their closer, Jonathan Papelbon (shown in the accompanying image in an earlier, uncharacteristically unhappy appearance), who not only blew the save, lead (in spectacular fashion), and the game against the Angels, and hastened his team’s exit from the playoffs, but was also booed by the (un)faithful.

Ooh, they’re not only a fickle bunch, but a hard one, these Beantown fans.

As a Yankee aficionado of long standing, I thought that Papelbon’s statement last year that he, rather than Mariano Rivera, should close out the All-Star Game was a bit…presumptuous, not to mention bumptious.

Still, the guy had not given up a run in 26 innings over 17 postseason games. Till last night, that is.

Then the fans let him have it. Bet they must have been watching the fans applaud Matt Halliday the night after his late-inning error cost the St. Cardinals the game and thought to themselves, “Wimps!”

Now, Theo Epstein has some serious rethinking to do this offseason—like what to do about David Ortiz. Now, I’m not saying what ails Big Papi, but (wink, wink!) here’s a clue. That one measly hit the former slugger had in 12 at-bats against the Angels was a lot like the 99 RBIs he had throughout the regular season—too little, too late.

Just like his team.

Pardon me while I put on my Yankees cap, get out the broom—and toss Papelbon and Papi a crying towel.
